Fidel Castro gives rare speech saying he will soon die

HAVANA (AP) — Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro delivered a valedictory speech on Tuesday to the Communist Party he put in power a half-century ago, telling party members he would soon die and exhorting them to help his ideas survive.

"I'll be 90 years old soon," Castro said in his most extensive public appearance in years. "Soon I'll be like all the others. The time will come for all of us, but the ideas of the Cuban Communists will remain as proof on this planet that if they are worked at with fervor and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need, and we need to fight without truce to obtain them."  MORE_

NEW YORK (AP) — Maurice Ashley was 14 when he saw a high school friend playing chess and challenged him to a match. He lost badly, but it sparked a love affair that started him playing nearly non-stop ever since.

There were the countless hours competing against the hustlers in city parks, and the serious players at chess clubs in Manhattan. There were the years spent against increasingly tougher competition in college, and ultimately against the best of the best at tournaments around the country and abroad.

All that playing has led the 50-year-old Ashley to some trailblazing accomplishments — the first black person to be designated as a chess grandmaster, and last Wednesday, the first black person to be inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis. He received his honor as the U.S. Chess Championship got underway, with Ashley taking... MORE

Child Safety Seat Event Planned for the Shreveport Area

TROOP G NEWS RELEASE

April 15, 2016

Shreveport, LA- Louisiana State Police Troop G is planning to conduct a free child passenger safety seat check-up event on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Walmart Super Center located on Mansfield Rd in Shreveport.

It is a proven fact that car seats and booster seats save lives. These devices offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash. However, approximately 3 out of 4 child seats are not used correctly. This misuse rate can be attributed to the great variety of child seats available, the great range of children’s weights and heights, and the vast array of vehicles in today’s market. These misuses span all races, educational levels, and socioeconomic status.

During the past 30 years, approximately 8,959 lives have been saved by the use of child restraints according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is important that caregivers ensure children are properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt anytime they are traveling in a vehicle.

Every Louisiana State Police Troop is recognized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a child safety seat “Inspection Station”. Troop G Troopers/technicians are available seven days a week to inspect car seats.

Sanders cheers strikers as 39K Verizon workers walk out

By MICHAEL BALSAMO and KAREN MATTHEWS
Apr. 13, 2016 3:56 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders cheered on striking Verizon workers Wednesday after 39,000 landline and cable employees walked off the job.

Sanders told workers at a picket line in Brooklyn they displayed courage by standing up to the telecommunications giant.

"I know your families are going to pay a price," Sanders shouted. "On behalf of every worker in America who is facing the same kind of pressure, thank you for what you're doing. We're going to win this thing!"

Sanders' rival, Hillary Clinton, said in a statement earlier Wednesday she was "disappointed" that negotiations had broken down between Verizon and its unions.

BATON ROUGE - Today, Governor John Bel Edwards signed an executive order providing employment protections for state employees and employees of state contractors on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, political affiliation, disability, or age. This executive order also prohibits discrimination in services provided by state agencies, and recognizes an exemption for churches and religious organizations.

Similar executive orders were signed by former Governors Edwin Edwards and Kathleen Blanco and are in place around the country. There is currently no state law protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) Louisianans from employment discrimination.

“We are fortunate enough to live in a state that is rich with diversity, and we are built on a foundation of unity and fairness for all of our citizens,” said Gov. Edwards. “We respect our fellow citizens for their ... MORE

BREAKING: Facebook Messages in "Secret" Location May Have Harmed You

Picture
What ever they were thinking as to why I didn't answer..it really would be hard for them to understand NOW!!!!
-Cakediva®, Charmaine Jones
It has just been revealed by users, that facebook has a feature called "Filtered Messages", presumably, for the purpose of filtering unsolicited, or SPAM messages from other users.

The problem is that those "filtered" messages in many cases, contained years worth of messages concerning family emergencies, job opportunities, missed earning opportunities, and others.  One victim of the SNAFU is celebrity cake designer, Cakediva®, who, tonight, found teaching requests, wedding and event cake orders, family messages, and even her long lost, real sister.

Users are aflutter with agonizing tales of losses, inconveniences, damaged friendships, lost business, lost love, family crisis notifications and more.

NOTE: We are awaiting a response from Facebook's representatives, on the matter. Please check back here for updates on this breaking story.

Caddo Parish, Louisiana--- Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator will host two opportunities for young drivers to attend a safe driving program at Sheriff’s Safety Town this month. The program will focus on the dangers of distracted and impaired driving.

The safety course will cover distractions including texting, cell phones, and music, and different forms of impairment such as alcohol and drug use. Part of the course includes operating an electric vehicle while wearing impairment goggles that simulate the effects of driving under the influence, Prator said.

The class will be offered April 12 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. and April 27 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Participants must have either a valid driver's license or learner's permit. The course is limited to 20 participants, so pre-registration is required.

New push to keep seniors in home, community-based programs

CHICAGO (AP) — The federal government is pushing states to keep more low-income seniors out of nursing homes and, instead, enroll them in home and community-based programs.

The shift comes as demand for long-term care is rising. By 2050, the number of people older than 85 is expected to triple to more than 18 million. These seniors tend to have the highest disability rate and the greatest need for long-term care.

The tug-of-war between rising demand and controlling costs has advocates for seniors worrying about quality of care.

Medicaid is one of the largest expenses for states, and a it's a program they look to for savings when budgets are tight. Medicaid spending on long-term care for seniors rose by 4 percent, to nearly ... MORE

REVIEW: Shreveport's Ology Jazz Sextet

By Marcinho Savant
Entertainment Writer
Picture
There was, much to my joy, a jazz sextet playing on the venue’s stage. The sound system was clear, and crisp--- masterfully installed, and very professional. Everything about the festival, that I saw, was was very well done. If you haven’t attended, please make it your business to make it there, at least once.

The ensemble on the stage was called the Ology Jazz Sextet, and I was not prepared for the performance I witnessed. I’ve reviewed all kinds of performances, from Kletzmer, to Opera, and I recognize expertise pretty quickly. I hadn’t, yet, heard any real jazz music here in Shreveport since my arrival to town, and today corrected that negligence on my part.

Six people on a stage. Each so laid back. So...  MORE

Anti-Racism Activist & Educator, Jane Elliot, Speaks To White Citizens On Receiving The Same Treatment As Black Citizens

"I want every white person in this room, who would be happy to be treated as this society in general treats our citizens, our black citizens. If you as a white person would be happy to receive the same treatment that our black citizens do in this society - please stand!

"You didn't understand the directions. If you white folks want to be treated the way blacks are in this society - stand! - Nobody is standing here. That says very plainly that you KNOW what's happening. You KNOW you don't want it for YOU. I want to know why YOU are so willing to accept it or to ALLOW it to happen for others?" - Jane Elliot.
