On January 22, 2016 at 5:08 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a report of a vehicle/pedestrian crash on US Highway 171 about two miles south of Grand Cane that claimed the life of a Many man.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2016 Dodge Journey driven by 17 -year-old India Williams of Mansfield was traveling south on US HWY 171, when for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle exited the right lane and struck 62-year-old Johnnie Cooper of Many, LA who was standing outside of his vehicle on the side nearest to the travel lane.
Cooper did not survive his injuries and was later pronounced dead at University Health in Shreveport.
Impairment is not suspected in this crash, but toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers want to remind motorists how important it is to follow the “Move Over Law” by merging to the left lane when you encounter a stopped motorist on the roadside. Troopers aggressively enforce this law to avoid these types of tragic crashes.
Also you can be proactive and take extra steps such as assuring that your vehicle is in good working conditions prior to making your trip. By checking your vehicle and making sure your fuel tank is full, you can significantly decrease your chances of being stranded on the roadside.
